Staying Active at Home
Many people feel they are forced to accept "the signs" of aging. Their energy decreases, their aches and pains increase and new ailments and illnesses start to pop up. The "Golden Years" can feel a bit tarnished if the elements of a healthy lifestyle are left unmanaged. These lifestyle elements that keep us healthy during our youth can translate to our later years in staying active at home with just a few minor adjustments. Regular exercise, proper diet, annual check ups with a physician and socialization are the foundation for an active life.
- Stay/Get Involved: Joining local charitable organizations or volunteering can add meaning and fulfillment.
- Stay/Get Connected: Solitude can be self-defeating; so stay connected to your community through groups and events.
- Daily Exercise: Partner up with a group, gym or friend to start and maintain a regular exercise program (always consult your physician before getting started).
- Proper Diet: Our dietary needs change with age. Consult a physician and/or registered dietician to assure you are following the most appropriate diet plan.
- Maintain Health: Follow up with regular doctors visits and exams (ask your primary care physician for a list of health related tests and screenings).
The primary thing to remember is never say "I'm too old to start ..."
